Looking Back to the Treasures of the Past: Vintage Filipino Movies from Late 30's and Classic OPM Songs

To those people who have loved watching Filipino movies before the advent of Millennium are surely aware of these lines: “Para kang karinderyang bukas para sa lahat ng gustong kumain”; “Ayoko ng putik”; “Gaano kadalas ang minsan”; and “You’re nothing but a trying hard second-rate copycat.” These lines can be traced in the Filipino movies produced in late 1980s.

Basically, the cinema of the Philippines can be traced back to the early years of filmmaking in 1897. This is why the Filipino movie screen before have made a tremendous change, which is very much vivid when compared to the contemporary times—not only in the filming process but as well as the plot.

In today’s movies, formulaic romantic comedy is always the theme of many mainstream releases. Of course, films now are digital such as “Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros" by Aureus Solito that was released in 2005 and many more. But how about looking back to the vintage movies produced by Filipinos, specifically the films released in 1930s? Movie aficionados may say that this would certainly be an exciting thing to do.

To begin with, the first Filipino film that became popular in 1930s is “Ang Aswang,” a monstrous movie depicting the Philippine folklore. During such time, the famous director was Carmen Concha who became the first female director in the history of Philippine cinema. The following are among the films she produced during the years of her dominion in Philippine cinema:

  • Magkaisang Landas (1939)
  • Yaman ng Mahirap (1939)
  • Pangarap (1940)

Meanwhile, it is also ideal to review the films that were produced in 1942 to 1945 since most of the movies in this era depict propaganda pictures, which is influenced by the Japanese occupation. Alternatively, movies released during 1950s are the product of Philippine cinema’s first golden age wherein the Big Four Studios were at their supremacy to create films. These are the Sampaguita Pictures, Premiere Productions, LVN Pictures, and Lebran International.

Furthermore, the Philippine cinema’s second golden age was celebrated in 1970s up to the early 1980s. In this period, many of the movies are produced by the so-called avant-grade filmmakers. The following are some of the popular movies released at that time:

  • Tinimbang ka Ngunit Kulang (1971) and Maynila: Sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag (1975) by Lino Brocka
  • Oro, Plata, Mata by Peque Gallaga (1982)
  • Pagdating sa Dulo (1971) by Ishmael Bernal (1975)

Apparently, it will really be so nice to watch these classic films that depict the revolutionary changes that occur not solely in filmmaking but as well as the setting of the nation. Unfortunately, getting the copies of these classic films are almost impossible this time since some copies of these were claimed to be uncared during the early years. Some people may still be able to borrow some copies from friends who still hold a copy of these classic Filipino movies.

Good thing, KabayanCentral is one of the few sites, if not, the only one that offer archives of collection of movies from the late 30s, which still appear in black and white.
