In pre-War Manila I really only remember three restaurants: Ma Mon Luk, New Europe and Swiss Inn. Ma Mon Luk was the true cradle of Pinoy democracy, with presidents eating next to drivers, socialites next to lavanderas. Ma Mon Luk was the first restaurant I went to by myself. It was a day I paid for my own mami. New Europe and Swiss Inn, of course, were more upscale in clientele and cuisine, and just as memorable. There were great meals to be had in eating establishments such as these, but the best food was to be found at home. And some of the best meals were produced in the kitchens of the Roces-Reyes family.
