It opens up a new field of research in Philippine studies on previously unknown materials in European libraries and archives.
Marlies S. Salazar studied history, literature, and linguistics at the Freie Universitšt Berlin, obtained a degree in Russian from the Ecole Nationale des Langues Orientales in Paris, and an M.A. in Linguistics from the Sorbonne. She continued her studies of Southeast Asian languages and literature at the University of Leiden in the Netherlands.
After having taught languages and literature at the University of the Philippines and the Ateneo de Manila University for fourteen years, she concentrated on research and obtained a Ph.D. in Philippine Linguistics from the University of the Philippines.
