The 30-year period from 1868 to 1898 constitutes a distinct chapter in Japanese-Philippine affairs. To a historian of Japanese-Philippine Affairs, the problem of primary importance during this period concerns the interaction between Japan's aspirations for equality with the Western powers on the one hand, and its immediate interest in the Southwestern Pacific on the other. Dr. Josefa M. Saniel, former dean of the U.P. Asian Center, is a trailblazer in the research on Philippine-Japanese relations, and in the promotion of Japanese studies.
