Sky ladders, gods, and dragon kings, how the world came to be and how it works, relations between gods and mortals, adventures of tricksters and cheats -- these motifs accentuate the many folk stories featured in Susie Tan's Asian Hearts: A Review of Filipino and Chinese Folk Tales. The book explores the character, beliefs, values, and aspirations of the Filipinos and the Chinese as revealed in their folk literature. From their myths and legends come some striking similarities and differences. Creation myths and legends come some striking similarities and differences. Creation myths show how the early Filipinos and Chinese explained the workings of the physical world. Legends relate the exploits of heroes, or trace how certain places came to be named. Other chapters deal with fables, marchen (stories of magic) as well as religious, didactic, novelistic and jocular tales. Through its examination of Filipino and Chinese folk stories, Asian Hearts seeks to help readers gain a broader understanding of the cultures of two peoples linked by geography and history for centuries. Susie L. Tan, better known as Lin Ting Ting among her friends, is currently an active board member of the International P.E.N., Philippine Center, and president of the Asian Writers' League of the Philippines. Her collection of essays, The Pushcart Stranger, won the first prize in the 1993 Overseas Chinese Literature Awards in Taipei.
