Bautista teaches poetry and creative writing at De La Salle University, Manila, where he is a full professor and writer-in-residence. His books on poetry, fiction, and essays have won many literary awards, including the Palanca Hall of Fame. He has taught at Waseda University in Japan and Ohio University in the United States. He was also visiting writer at Cambridge University, England. Bautista holds an honorary fellowship in creative writing from the State University of Iowa, United States, and a doctorate in language and literature from De La Salle University.
