A simple story of hurting, healing, loving and forgiving. "I hate my mother! I HATE HER!" Paolo screamed. Like cancer, it was a hatred that had eaten up the poor boy. Grandpa Albert was completely shaken. He wanted to reach out to Paolo, but he did not know how. He had always avoided tender moments in his whole life. "Paolo," Monica said. She clasped his hand in hers. "People make mistakes, including you and me. Including Grandma Helen and Grandpa Albert. We must forgive one another. You must forgive your mother." "But she's not sorry!" Paolo sobbed. "You don't know that," Grandpa Albert said in a baritone that was crumpled with emotion. "Wherever she is, she's probably lonely and unhappy. "If she's sorry, why hasn't she come back?" Grandma Helen stepped closer to Paolo. She held his face in her hands. "Maybe she can't. Maybe, she doesn't know where you are." Paolo had never thought of this. His bitterness begins to ebb, just like a high tide that flows back to the sea. "You don't need to wait till your mother says sorry. You can forgive her right now, right here." Grandma Helen was surprised at herself. Did these words come out of her mouth? A cold shiver ran down her spine.... Teacher Carmel has a Ph.D. in English from the University of Sto. Tomas and is, at present, a doctoral student of educational management in De La Salle University. She is the author of the Spoken English series being used in some prep, elementary and high schools since 1985, and which comprises 11 volumes and 33 supplementary audio tapes. A solo parent since her only child was two years old, she considers herself a happy survivor of life's up's and down's. Deeply concerned about "abandoned kids," she hopes that Cashew Nuts will show how people can deal with their woundedness; that they can heal, become whole again, and focus on loving others.
