"Gingered chicken in green papayas, smothered with coconut milk, never fails to keep the tongue moist long after the meal is over. So does slightly burnt sugar lodged at the roof of the mouth, melting with infinite slowness. Such is the taste of a kiss at the front door, when one foot must already seek the first step down, while the heart remains on a plate at the head of the table -- " An anomalous kiss. A white turtle ferrying the dreams of the dead. A working siesta in a five-star hotel. A woman's twelve-metre hair trawling corpses from a river. Or a queue of longings in Darlinghurst. These enigmatic tales of chance and hope are among twenty-three stories set in the Philippines and Australia. Alternately mythic, wistful or quirky, Merlinda Bobis' tales resonate with an original and confident storytelling voice. "A candid mind, a sympathetic heart, and a delicious sense of humor..." - Yasmine Gooneratne "Merlinda Bobis presents a world of large emotions, wild dreams and vivid sensuality. A valuable contribution to postcolonial and multicultural literature" - Bruce Bennet "Merlinda Bobis writes like an angel. Her characters whisper to you long after they've told their bittersweet tales." - Arlene J. Chai Merlinda Bobis is the author of four poetry books and four plays. Her play, "Rita's Lullaby", won the prestigious international award, Prix Italia, for radio fiction in 1998; previously, it had won the Australian Writers' Guild Award and the Ian Reed Radio Drama Prize.
