Filipino Personality: Indigenous and Cross-Cultural Studies reviews the status of personality research in the Philippines, particularly from the trait psychology perspective, and describes several of the authors' own studies on the language and structure of Filipino personality and emotion. The authors confirm that personality trait concepts have been widely used for describing, evaluating, and understanding self and others in the Philippines, and that significant achievements have been made in delineating, assessing, and validating indigenous Filipino personality concepts. This book systematically maps the language and structure of the personality and emotion domains using the Filipino (Tagalog) language. Likewise, by relating these indigenous concepts and dimensions to those in other cultures, it addresses the cross-cultural universality versus uniqueness of personality concepts and dimensions. Thus, it becomes an invaluable contribution to the corpus of Filipino personality psychology. A. Timothy Church received his Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Minnesota and is currently a professor of counseling psychology at Washington State University. From 1982 to 1984 he was a visiting professor at De La Salle University in Manila, Philippines. Marcia S. Katigbak received her B.A. in psychology from St. Scholastica's College, Manila, her master's degree in counseling from De La Salle University, Manila, and her Ph.D. in educational measurement from Washington State University where she is a research associate. The authors have collaborated on a number of studies in the Philippines, including investigations of Filipino college students' conceptions of healthy personality, the effects of language of data collection on research results with Filipinos, the academic motivations of Filipino college students, indigenous assessment of intelligence in rural Philipine preschool children, home environment and nutritional factors in the cognitive development of rural Philippine children, Filipino personality and emotion concepts, identification and assessment of indigenous dimensions of Filipino personality and emotion, and the cross-cultural applicability of Western personality measures for the Philippine setting.
