Institute of Philippine Culture
The Institute of Philippine Culture is a social science research organization of the Ateneo de Manila University. Founded in 1960, the IPC seeks to generate knowledge that helps deepen the understanding of cultures and societies; improve the quality of life of disadvantaged groups; and build a peaceful, just, and equitable society in the Philippines, Southeast Asia, and the world. The fulfillment of the IPC goals is anchored on research, the major focus of its activities. From this knowledge base emanate two other principal areas of competence—knowledge dissemination and capability building. The IPC is engaged in the interrelated pursuit of these activities within multi- and interdisciplinary perspectives. Over the years, the IPC research has dealt with development administration, and policy and program analysis, with the aim of helping development agencies enhance their capabilities for involving their beneficiaries in project planning, implementation, and evaluation. Its work with development agencies has been extensive in the areas of agrarian reform, children and youth, community health, environment, farming systems, irrigation, social forestry, upland communities, urban poverty, and women.
The results of IPC research and related activities are disseminated mainly through its publications program. In the past, the Institute’s publications series included the IPC Papers, IPC Monograph, and IPC Discussion Papers. New additions to the series are the IPC Reports, IPC Culture and Development Series, and IPC Social Explorations Series.
A central concern of the IPC’s capability building function is to strengthen participation in the teaching functions of the University through the Professional Social Science Program for Southeast Asian Students, which the IPC has run jointly with the Department of Sociology and Anthropology (DSA) of the School of Social Sciences of the Ateneo de Manila University. Begun in 1986, this program has trained over a hundred development practitioners from Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam.
