The compilation of this dictionary has taken many years. The work was undertaken because of the need for an English-Tagalog dictionary which would be more comprehensive and accurate than any previously published. Up to the time of the publication of the dictionary of the Institute of National Language there were only pocket-size English-Tagalog vocabularies. This work was begun during the time of the occupation of the Philippines by the Japanese but was interrupted by the author’s internment in Los Baños by the Japanese forces. After the war the work was continued and eventually about four hundred typed pages were mimeographed. These formed the nucleus of what was to become a much larger dictionary. Work continued intermittently through the years until the manuscript eventually contained more than 3,700 pages.
