This edition was updated to include leading and relevant cases relating to the Family Code. These include cases on parental custody of children under 7 years of age, on what constitutes psychological incapacity as a ground for declaring a marriage void, the use of DNA testing to prove paternity, marriage between a Filipino and an alien and the subsequent divorce as well as presumption of death of a spouse.
The Appendices were also updated to include new and relevant laws such as R.A. No. 8980 on Early Childhood Care and Development which institutionalizes a national system for early childhood care and development; the Supreme Court Rule on Adoption of Filipino children, and R.A. No. 9288 otherwise known as the Newborn Screening Act of 2004. The latter Act ensures that every newborn child shall undergo screening in order to detect and treat heritable conditions that may lead to mental retardation and death, if undetected. Other relevant laws include R.A. No. 9048 on corrections of typographical errors in entries in the Civil Register without need for a judicial order as well as R.A. No. 9344, the Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act.
