Max was born as a thunderstorm raged over Sto. Domingo, Ilocos Sur to Assemblyman Benito T. Soliven and Pelagia J. Villaflor.
To his dying day, Max had faithfully kept a pledge he made to his dying father (who survived Bataan, the Death March and Capas imprisonment) never to enter politics but use his God-given talent in writing to serve God and country.
While studying at the New York's Fordham University, he wrote for the New York Times and Newsweek magazine. He begun his journalistic career in the Philippines with The Sentinel and became Publisher-Editor of The Evening News at 27.
He was the celebrated columnist of The Manila Times until Martial Law was declared in September 1972.
Imprisonment failed to silence his voice. He continue to fight by working for the so called mosquito press during the dark days of the dictatorship.
He organized the Philippine Daily Inquirer in 1985 and became the founding father as well as Publisher and Chairman of the Board of The Philippine Star in 1986 until the time of his death.
His By the Way column played a vital role in shaping the nation's political landscape, covering eight presidents.
He was the chairman of the journalist group, Samahang Plaridel and a Lifetime Fellow of the International Press Institute (IPI).
