In analyzing the purpose by which the US granted independence to the Philippines, rather than simply observing the effects of that process and then speculating backwards, Carlson attempted to provide new insights into the nature of the Filipino-American colonial relationship. A critical review of recently declassified American documents and the private papers of the key American officials involved in the decolonization process illustrates the inadequacies of past historical interpretations of the Fil-Am relationship.
Keith Thor Carlson is from a small community on the West Coast of Canada. He received his BA in 1988, graduating with academic distinctions in the fields of history and political science. While still an undergraduate, he met and married Teresa Molina, a Filipina classmate who ha dmoved to Canada a a child. In 1991, after studying under Dr W.T. Wooley at the University of Victoria, and having researched the major American archival repositories dealing with Filipino-American history, he graduated with an MA. His thesis forms the foundation of this book.
