In this biography of Lorenzo M. Tanada, the author attempts to delineate the various periods in the political life of the subject. She seeks to understand Tanada by tracing the development of his nationalist ideas in relation to the significant sociopolitical events, forces and personalities that engaged him and, more particularly, by charting the flow and the occasional meanderings of his evolution as a transformational leader during the martial law period. Lorenzo M. Tanada remained in the center of the political arena until his dying days. Unlike a great number of revered national heroes who showed that the Filipinos are worth dying for, he demonstrated throughout his long and eventful existence that indeed, the Filipinos and their country are also worth living for and keeping faith with. And through his personal odyssey, he showed that the self can be scripted, not just by life's external circumstance but also by internal reflections and by chiseled acts of will, into a work of art-timeless, timely and telling.
