Gamalinda was born in Manila, where he worked as an editor and journalist and where he previously published three novels, a collection of short stories and poetry. His work has appeared in Harper's Magazine and in various international journals. He also edited Flippi'n: Filipinos On America, an anthology of fiction and poetry.
