In three movements and periods, the film traces the deterioration of two haciendero families from Negros, the Ojedas and the Lorenzos, during the World War II.
The "Oro" section paints the life of comfort and luxury of the Negros aristocrats before the war and the puppy love between Trining Ojeda (Cherie Gil) and Miguel Lorenzo ( Joel Torre).
The "Plata" section presents their life during the Japanese Occupation when Ojedas take refuge with the Lorenzos in the latters provincial hacienda.
With two friends, Jo Russell (Maya Valdes) and Viring (Lorli Villanueva), they pursue a life of mahjong sessions to combat boredom.
In the "Mata" section the two families move further into ther forest and are victimized by bandits.
Miguel grows up and becomes an almost manic killer while Trining joins the bandits.
At the end, those who survive show the physical and psychological scars of war.
